Prisca, also known as Priscilla, and her husband Aquila are prominent figures in the New Testament, known for their significant contributions to the early Christian church. They are often mentioned together, highlighting their partnership in ministry and their dedication to the spread of the Gospel.

Background and Early Life

Aquila was a Jew from Pontus, and Prisca, his wife, is believed to have been of Roman origin. The couple is first introduced in the Book of Acts, where they are described as having been expelled from Rome by the edict of Emperor Claudius, which targeted Jews. "After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them" (Acts 18:1-2).

Ministry and Collaboration with Paul

Prisca and Aquila are best known for their close association with the Apostle Paul. They shared the same trade as Paul, being tentmakers, which facilitated their initial connection. "And because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked with them, for they were tentmakers by trade" (Acts 18:3). Their home became a base for Paul's ministry in Corinth, and they played a crucial role in the establishment of the church there.

The couple later traveled with Paul to Ephesus, where they continued their ministry. In Ephesus, they encountered Apollos, an eloquent speaker and knowledgeable in the Scriptures, but who only knew the baptism of John. Prisca and Aquila took him aside and explained to him "the way of God more accurately" (Acts 18:26), demonstrating their deep understanding of Christian doctrine and their commitment to teaching others.

Role in the Early Church

Prisca and Aquila's influence extended beyond their work with Paul. They are mentioned in several of Paul's letters, indicating their ongoing involvement in the early church. In his letter to the Romans, Paul sends greetings to them, acknowledging their sacrifice and dedication: "Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who have risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them" (Romans 16:3-4). This passage highlights their bravery and the high regard in which they were held by the early Christian community.

Their home also served as a meeting place for believers, as noted in Paul's first letter to the Corinthians: "The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prisca greet you warmly in the Lord, along with the church that meets at their house" (1 Corinthians 16:19). This indicates their hospitality and leadership within the church, providing a space for worship and fellowship.

Legacy

Prisca and Aquila are remembered as exemplary figures in the early church, known for their partnership in ministry, their theological acumen, and their unwavering support of the Apostle Paul. Their account is a testament to the vital role of laypeople in the spread of Christianity and the establishment of the early church. Their legacy continues to inspire Christians to serve faithfully and to use their homes and resources for the advancement of the Gospel.
