The term "pretty" is not directly found in the Bible; however, the concept of beauty and attractiveness is addressed throughout Scripture. In biblical times, beauty was often seen as a reflection of God's creation and was appreciated as a gift from Him. The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals whose physical appearance is noted, as well as teachings on the nature of true beauty.

Biblical Examples of Beauty:

1. Sarah · Sarah, the wife of Abraham, is described as a beautiful woman. Her beauty was so notable that Abraham feared for his life because of it when they traveled to Egypt. Genesis 12:11-12 states, "As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, 'Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman, and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.'"

2. Rachel · Rachel, the wife of Jacob, is also described as beautiful. Genesis 29:17 notes, "Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was shapely and beautiful."

3. Esther · Esther's beauty played a significant role in her becoming queen and ultimately saving her people. Esther 2:7 describes her as "lovely in form and features."

True Beauty in Scripture:

While physical beauty is acknowledged, the Bible emphasizes the importance of inner beauty and character. Proverbs 31:30 states, "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." This verse highlights the transient nature of physical beauty and the enduring value of a godly character.

1 Peter 3:3-4 further instructs, "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as braided hair or gold jewelry or fine clothes, but from the inner disposition of your heart, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight."

Cultural and Spiritual Implications:

In biblical culture, beauty was often associated with favor and blessing, yet it also came with challenges and responsibilities. The Bible warns against vanity and the pursuit of beauty for its own sake. Ezekiel 28:17 speaks of the fall of the king of Tyre, saying, "Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor."

The Scriptures encourage believers to focus on cultivating inner beauty and to view physical appearance as secondary to spiritual virtues. The emphasis is on the heart and one's relationship with God, which is considered the true measure of beauty in the biblical worldview.
