Introduction:
Phinees, also known as Phinehas, is a significant figure in the Old Testament, known for his zealousness for God's holiness and his role in the priesthood. He is a grandson of Aaron, the brother of Moses, and the son of Eleazar, the high priest. Phinehas is most notably recognized for his decisive action during a time of moral and spiritual crisis in Israel, which earned him a covenant of peace from God.

Biblical Account:
Phinehas first comes to prominence in the Book of Numbers. During Israel's wilderness journey, the Israelites began to engage in idolatry and immorality with the Moabite women, leading to God's anger and a subsequent plague. In Numbers 25:7-8 , it is recorded: "When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand, followed the Israelite into the tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted." This act of zeal stopped the plague and demonstrated Phinehas's commitment to upholding God's covenant.

Covenant of Peace:
As a result of his actions, God made a special covenant with Phinehas. Numbers 25:12-13 states: "Therefore declare that I hereby grant him My covenant of peace. It will be a covenant of perpetual priesthood for him and his descendants, because he was zealous for his God and made atonement for the Israelites." This covenant assured Phinehas and his descendants a lasting priesthood, highlighting the importance of zeal for God's holiness and the seriousness of idolatry and immorality.

Role in Israel's History:
Phinehas continued to play a significant role in Israel's history. He is mentioned in the Book of Joshua as a leader and mediator. In Joshua 22, when a potential conflict arose between the tribes of Israel over an altar built by the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Phinehas was sent to investigate. His diplomatic skills and commitment to unity helped prevent civil war among the tribes.

Phinehas also appears in the Book of Judges. In Judges 20:28 , during the conflict with the tribe of Benjamin, Phinehas is noted as serving before the Ark of the Covenant, indicating his continued role in spiritual leadership and intercession for the people of Israel.

Legacy and Significance:
Phinehas's legacy is one of fervent devotion to God and His commandments. His actions serve as a reminder of the importance of upholding God's standards and the consequences of turning away from them. Phinehas is often cited as an example of righteous indignation and the necessity of taking a stand against sin within the community of God's people.

His account is a testament to the blessings that come from faithfulness and the enduring nature of God's promises to those who honor Him. Phinehas's life and actions are a powerful illustration of the role of the priesthood in ancient Israel and the importance of spiritual leadership in guiding the people according to God's will.

PHINEES

fin'-e-es (Phinees; Codex Vaticanus (Swete), Pheinees (1 Esdras 8:2)):

(1) Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron (1 Esdras 5:5; 8:2, 29; 2 Esdras 1:2; 1 Maccabees 2:26; Sirach 45:23).

(2) The father of Achias and son of Hell (Eli), a descendant of (1), and one of Ezra's progenitors (2 Esdras 1:2); but this link is not found in Ezra's genealogy (1 Esdras 8:1), nor in Ezra 7:1;; 1 Chronicles 6, and its insertion in 2 Esdras 1:2 is a mistake, since Ezra's descent was from Eleazar, while this Phinees (Phinehas) was a descendant of Ithamar, the youngest son of Aaron.

(3) A Levite, the father of Eleazar (1 Esdras 8:63) equals "Phinehas" of Ezra 8:33. But it is just possible that the well-known Eleazar (1) is referred to here, and so not another and different Phinees.

(4) The King James Version equals the Revised Version (British and American) "Phinoe" (1 Esdras 5:31).
