Urijah: A Prophet in the Time of Jehoiakim: Fled to Egypt; Taken; Killed by Jehoiakim

Topical Encyclopedia
Urijah, also spelled Uriah, was a prophet during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah, a period marked by political turmoil and spiritual decline. His account is briefly recounted in the Book of Jeremiah, where he is depicted as a contemporary of the more prominent prophet Jeremiah. Urijah's ministry and tragic fate serve as a somber reminder of the perils faced by those who faithfully delivered God's messages in times of national apostasy.

Prophetic Ministry

Urijah, the son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim, was called by God to prophesy against Jerusalem and Judah. His messages echoed those of Jeremiah, warning of impending judgment due to the nation's persistent idolatry and disobedience to the covenant. The content of Urijah's prophecies, as recorded in Jeremiah 26:20-23, was consistent with the divine warnings that had been delivered by other prophets, emphasizing the destruction that would come upon Jerusalem if the people did not repent.

Flight to Egypt

The boldness of Urijah's prophecies incited the wrath of King Jehoiakim and the ruling authorities. Unlike Jeremiah, who was protected by some officials and elders, Urijah found himself in grave danger. Fearing for his life, he fled to Egypt, seeking refuge from the king's murderous intent. This flight to Egypt, a common place of asylum in the ancient Near East, underscores the severity of the threat he faced for his prophetic declarations.

Capture and Execution

Despite his efforts to escape, Urijah's refuge in Egypt was short-lived. King Jehoiakim, determined to silence him, sent Elnathan son of Achbor and other men to Egypt to capture the prophet. Urijah was brought back to Judah, where he faced the king's wrath. In a brutal display of power and defiance against God's word, Jehoiakim executed Urijah by the sword and disgracefully cast his body into the burial place of the common people. This act of violence against a prophet of the Lord is a stark illustration of the king's hardened heart and the nation's spiritual decline.

Biblical Reference

The account of Urijah's ministry and martyrdom is found in Jeremiah 26:20-23 :

"Now there was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah son of Shemaiah from Kiriath-jearim. He prophesied against this city and this land words like all those of Jeremiah. King Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death. But Uriah heard of it and fled in fear to Egypt. Then King Jehoiakim sent men to Egypt: Elnathan son of Achbor and certain other men with him. They brought Uriah out of Egypt and took him to King Jehoiakim, who had him struck down with a sword and his body thrown into the burial place of the common people."

Significance

Urijah's account, though brief, highlights the perilous path of a true prophet in a time of national rebellion against God. His fate contrasts with that of Jeremiah, who, despite facing similar threats, was spared by divine providence and the intervention of sympathetic officials. Urijah's martyrdom serves as a testament to the cost of faithfully proclaiming God's truth in the face of opposition and the tragic consequences of a nation's rejection of divine warnings.
