Curiosity: And to See Jesus

Curiosity, a natural human inclination, is often portrayed in the Bible as a driving force that leads individuals to seek truth, understanding, and ultimately, a relationship with God. In the context of the New Testament, curiosity about Jesus Christ and His teachings is a recurring theme that illustrates the transformative power of seeking Him earnestly.

One of the most notable examples of curiosity leading to an encounter with Jesus is the account of Zacchaeus, the chief tax collector in Jericho. Zacchaeus, a man of short stature, was eager to see who Jesus was. His curiosity compelled him to climb a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus as He passed by. The Gospel of Luke records this encounter: "When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today'" (Luke 19:5). Zacchaeus's curiosity led to a personal encounter with Jesus, resulting in his repentance and salvation.

Similarly, the account of the woman with the issue of blood demonstrates how curiosity, coupled with faith, can lead to healing and restoration. This woman, having suffered for twelve years, believed that touching the hem of Jesus' garment would heal her. Her curiosity about Jesus' power and her faith in His ability to heal prompted her to act. As recorded in the Gospel of Mark, "Immediately her bleeding stopped, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction" (Mark 5:29).

The curiosity of the crowds is also evident throughout the Gospels. Many people followed Jesus, eager to hear His teachings and witness His miracles. In the Gospel of John, after Jesus fed the five thousand, the crowd sought Him out, curious about His identity and the source of His power. Jesus addressed their curiosity, saying, "Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you" (John 6:27). Here, Jesus redirects their curiosity from the temporal to the eternal, inviting them to seek spiritual nourishment.

The curiosity of the disciples themselves is another significant aspect. They often questioned Jesus about His parables and teachings, seeking deeper understanding. In Matthew 13:10-11 , the disciples asked, "Why do You speak to the people in parables?" Jesus replied, "The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them." Their curiosity was a catalyst for deeper revelation and insight into the mysteries of God's kingdom.

Curiosity about Jesus is not limited to those who encountered Him during His earthly ministry. Throughout history, individuals have been drawn to explore the life and teachings of Jesus, leading to personal transformation and faith. The Berean approach to Scripture, as exemplified by the Bereans in Acts 17:11 , who "examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true," highlights the importance of a curious and discerning spirit in the pursuit of truth.

In summary, curiosity, when directed towards Jesus, serves as a powerful motivator that can lead to personal encounters, spiritual growth, and a deeper understanding of God's will. The Bible encourages believers to seek Jesus with a sincere and open heart, promising that those who seek will find (Matthew 7:7).
