Lasea is a location mentioned in the New Testament, specifically in the Book of Acts. It is noted in the context of the Apostle Paul's journey to Rome as a prisoner. The reference to Lasea is found in Acts 27:8, which states: "We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea."

Geographical Context

Lasea was a town situated on the southern coast of the island of Crete. The mention of Lasea in Acts 27:8 places it in proximity to Fair Havens, a harbor that was considered less than ideal for wintering due to its exposure to the elements. The exact location of Lasea has been a subject of scholarly interest, with archaeological evidence suggesting it was near the modern-day village of Lasaia, east of Fair Havens.

Historical and Cultural Background

During the first century, Crete was a significant hub in the Mediterranean, known for its strategic location and bustling trade routes. The island was under Roman control, and its cities, including Lasea, would have been influenced by Roman governance and culture. The mention of Lasea in the context of Paul's journey highlights the challenges faced by ancient mariners, who had to navigate the treacherous waters and unpredictable weather of the Mediterranean Sea.

Biblical Significance

The brief mention of Lasea in the Book of Acts is part of the larger narrative of Paul's voyage to Rome, a journey fraught with peril and divine intervention. The Apostle Paul, under Roman guard, was being transported to stand trial before Caesar. The decision to sail past Fair Havens, despite Paul's warning of impending danger, led to a shipwreck on the island of Malta. This event is a testament to Paul's faith and God's providence, as all aboard were ultimately saved.

Theological Insights

The account of Lasea and the surrounding events in Acts 27 underscores themes of divine guidance and protection. Paul's journey, including the stop near Lasea, serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty over creation and His ability to use even adverse circumstances for His purposes. The narrative also illustrates the importance of heeding godly counsel, as Paul's advice was initially ignored, leading to the ship's perilous situation.

Conclusion

While Lasea itself is not a focal point of theological discourse, its mention in the context of Paul's journey provides valuable insights into the historical and geographical setting of the New Testament. It serves as a backdrop to the unfolding of God's plan through the Apostle Paul's ministry, demonstrating the intersection of divine providence and human decision-making in the early Christian narrative.

LASEA

la-se'-a (Lasaia): A town on the South coast of Crete, 5 miles East of Fair Havens (Acts 27:8). The ruins were examined in 1856 by G. Brown (see Code of Hammurabi (St. P), chapter xxiii, 640). If Paul's ship was detained long at this anchorage, it would be necessary to purchase stores from Lasea; and this in addition to the inconvenience of the roadstead (see FAIR HAVENS) would probably explain the captain's reluctance to winter there.
