Helkias, also known as Hilkiah, is a significant figure in the Old Testament, particularly noted for his role as a high priest during the reign of King Josiah of Judah. His account is primarily found in the books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, where he is depicted as a pivotal character in the religious reforms that took place in Judah.

Genealogy and Position

Helkias was a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses, and belonged to the Levitical priesthood. He served as the high priest in the temple of Jerusalem during a critical period in Judah's history. His lineage is outlined in 1 Chronicles 6:13-15, where he is identified as the son of Shallum and the father of Azariah.

Role in Josiah's Reforms

Helkias is best known for his involvement in the religious reforms initiated by King Josiah. During Josiah's reign, the temple in Jerusalem was in a state of disrepair, and the worship of Yahweh had been neglected in favor of idolatrous practices. In 2 Kings 22:3-7, Josiah orders the repair of the temple, and Helkias is entrusted with overseeing the work. It is during this restoration process that Helkias makes a momentous discovery.

Discovery of the Book of the Law

The most notable event associated with Helkias is the discovery of the "Book of the Law" in the temple. As recorded in 2 Kings 22:8 , "Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD.' And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, who read it." This discovery is considered a turning point in the history of Judah, as it led to a renewed commitment to the covenant with God.

Upon finding the book, Helkias gave it to Shaphan the scribe, who then read it to King Josiah. The king, upon hearing the words of the law, was deeply moved and tore his clothes in a sign of repentance and mourning (2 Kings 22:11). This event sparked a nationwide religious reform, as Josiah sought to align the kingdom's practices with the commands found in the book.

Consultation with Huldah the Prophetess

Following the discovery, Josiah sent a delegation, including Helkias, to consult with Huldah the prophetess to seek guidance from the Lord regarding the words of the book. Huldah's response, as recorded in 2 Kings 22:15-20, confirmed the impending judgment on Judah due to its disobedience but also assured Josiah of God's favor because of his humility and repentance.

Legacy

Helkias' role in the discovery of the Book of the Law and the subsequent reforms under Josiah had a lasting impact on the spiritual life of Judah. His actions contributed to a temporary revival of true worship and adherence to the covenant, setting a standard for future generations. Helkias is remembered as a faithful servant of God who played a crucial part in one of the most significant religious renewals in the history of Israel.
