Hazarenan, also spelled Hazar-enan, is a location mentioned in the Bible as a boundary marker for the land of Israel. The name "Hazarenan" is derived from Hebrew, meaning "village of springs" or "enclosure of springs," indicating a place characterized by water sources or springs.

Biblical References:

Hazarenan is referenced in the context of defining the northern boundary of the Promised Land. It is mentioned in the Book of Numbers and the Book of Ezekiel, both of which describe the territorial limits of Israel.

1. Numbers 34:9-10 : "The border will continue to Ziphron and end at Hazar-enan. This will be your boundary on the north. For your eastern boundary, you are to draw a line from Hazar-enan to Shepham."

2. Ezekiel 47:17 : "The border will extend from the sea to Hazar-enan, along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This will be the northern boundary."

In these passages, Hazarenan is described as a significant point in the delineation of Israel's northern border. It is situated near the region of Hamath and Damascus, indicating its location in the northernmost part of the land allocated to the Israelites.

Geographical and Historical Context:

The exact location of Hazarenan is not definitively known today, but it is generally believed to be in the vicinity of the modern-day border between Syria and Lebanon. Its mention alongside other known locations such as Hamath and Damascus provides some clues to its approximate location in ancient times.

Hazarenan's role as a boundary marker underscores its importance in the territorial integrity and identity of ancient Israel. The delineation of borders was crucial for the Israelites as they settled in the land promised to them by God. The boundaries defined in Numbers and Ezekiel reflect the divine mandate given to the Israelites regarding their inheritance.

Theological Significance:

From a theological perspective, the mention of Hazarenan in the Bible highlights the importance of land in the covenant relationship between God and Israel. The specific boundaries set by God were not merely geographical but also symbolic of His promise and faithfulness to His people. The land was a tangible expression of God's covenant, and the precise borders, including Hazarenan, were part of the divine plan for the nation of Israel.

In summary, Hazarenan serves as a significant geographical marker in the biblical narrative, representing the northernmost boundary of the land promised to the Israelites. Its mention in Scripture underscores the importance of land and boundaries in the fulfillment of God's promises to His chosen people.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Village of fountains, a place on the north-east frontier of Palestine (Numbers 34:9, 10). Some have identified it with Ayan ed-Dara in the heart of the central chain of Anti-Libanus. More probably, however, it has been identified with Kuryetein, about 60 miles east-north-east of Damascus. (Comp. Ezek. 47:17; 48:1.)
