The term "frees" does not appear explicitly in the Bible; however, the concept of freedom is a significant theme throughout the Scriptures. In the biblical context, freedom often refers to liberation from sin, spiritual bondage, and the constraints of the law, as well as the freedom to serve God and live according to His will.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the concept of freedom is closely associated with the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. This historical event is a foundational narrative that illustrates God's power to free His people from physical and spiritual bondage. Exodus 6:6 states, "Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment."

The Year of Jubilee, described in Leviticus 25, is another significant example of freedom in the Old Testament. Every fiftieth year, liberty was proclaimed throughout the land, and individuals who had sold themselves into servitude were released, and property was returned to its original owners. This practice symbolized God's desire for His people to live in freedom and justice.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, freedom is primarily understood in a spiritual sense. Jesus Christ is portrayed as the ultimate liberator who frees humanity from the bondage of sin and death. In John 8:36 , Jesus declares, "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." This freedom is not merely a release from physical oppression but a profound spiritual liberation that enables believers to live in righteousness and truth.

The Apostle Paul extensively discusses the theme of freedom in his epistles. In Galatians 5:1 , he writes, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery." Paul emphasizes that believers are freed from the law's constraints and are called to live by the Spirit, which leads to a life of love and service.

Theological Implications

From a theological perspective, freedom in the Bible is not an end in itself but a means to fulfill God's purposes. True freedom is found in submission to God's will and living in accordance with His commandments. This paradoxical understanding of freedom is captured in Romans 6:22 : "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the fruit you reap leads to holiness, and the outcome is eternal life."

Practical Application

For believers, the biblical concept of freedom has practical implications for daily living. It calls Christians to live in the freedom that Christ provides, resisting the temptations and entanglements of sin. It also encourages them to use their freedom to serve others in love, as stated in Galatians 5:13 : "For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love."

In summary, while the specific term "frees" is not found in the Bible, the overarching theme of freedom is central to the biblical narrative, encompassing both physical deliverance and spiritual liberation through Jesus Christ.
