The term "excellest" is an archaic English word that is derived from the verb "excel," meaning to surpass or be superior in quality, virtue, or achievement. In the context of the Bible, "excellest" is often used to describe the surpassing greatness or superiority of God, His attributes, or His works. Although the Berean Standard Bible does not use the term "excellest," the concept is prevalent throughout Scripture, emphasizing the incomparable nature of God and His deeds.

Divine Excellence

The excellence of God is a central theme in the Bible, highlighting His supreme nature and the perfection of His attributes. In Psalm 8:1 , the psalmist declares, "O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens." This verse underscores the unparalleled majesty and glory of God, which surpasses all creation.

Excellence in Creation

God's excellence is also evident in His creation. Genesis 1:31 states, "And God saw all that He had made, and it was very good." The perfection and order of the created world reflect the excellence of its Creator. The intricate design and beauty of the universe testify to God's superior wisdom and power.

Moral and Ethical Excellence

The Bible also speaks of moral and ethical excellence, which is rooted in the character of God. In Philippians 4:8 , believers are encouraged to focus on virtues that reflect God's excellence: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things." This verse calls Christians to emulate the moral excellence of God in their thoughts and actions.

Excellence in Christ

The New Testament reveals the excellence of God through the person and work of Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:15-18 describes Christ as "the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities. All things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." Christ's preeminence and role in creation demonstrate His divine excellence.

Excellence in the Life of Believers

Believers are called to reflect God's excellence in their lives. 1 Peter 2:9 states, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Christians are to live in a manner that showcases the virtues and excellence of God, serving as a testament to His transformative power.

Excellence in Worship

Worship is another area where the concept of "excellest" is applicable. Psalm 96:9 exhorts, "Worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth." Worshiping God in the beauty of holiness acknowledges His supreme excellence and invites believers to respond with reverence and awe.

In summary, while the specific term "excellest" may not appear in the Berean Standard Bible, the concept of divine excellence permeates the Scriptures, calling attention to the surpassing greatness of God, His creation, His moral standards, and His redemptive work through Christ. Believers are encouraged to reflect this excellence in their lives, worship, and witness to the world.
