Community as Joy and Reward

The concept of community as both a source of joy and a divine reward is deeply embedded in the biblical narrative. From the earliest accounts in Genesis to the teachings of the New Testament, the Bible underscores the significance of communal life as a reflection of God's design for humanity.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, the formation of community begins with the creation of man and woman. Genesis 2:18 states, "The LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.'" This foundational statement highlights the inherent need for companionship and community, suggesting that joy is found in relationships.

The nation of Israel itself is a testament to the joy and reward of community. As God's chosen people, Israel was called to live in covenantal relationship with God and with one another. The communal festivals, such as Passover and the Feast of Tabernacles, were times of collective joy and celebration, as seen in Deuteronomy 16:14-15 : "And you shall rejoice in your feast... for the LORD your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that you will be altogether joyful."

Wisdom Literature

The wisdom literature of the Old Testament further emphasizes the joy found in community. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 extols the benefits of companionship: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls, his companion can lift him up... A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." This passage illustrates the strength and joy derived from supportive relationships.

Prophetic Vision

The prophets also envisioned a future where community would be restored and perfected. Isaiah 65:18-19 speaks of a new creation where joy and community are intertwined: "But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for I will create Jerusalem to be a joy, and its people to be a delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and take delight in My people."

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the teachings of Jesus and the apostles further develop the theme of community as joy and reward. Jesus' ministry was marked by the formation of a new community, the Church, which He described as His body (1 Corinthians 12:27). The early Church exemplified communal living, as seen in Acts 2:46-47 : "With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people."

The apostle Paul frequently wrote about the joy found in Christian fellowship. In Philippians 2:1-2 , he urges believers to be "like-minded, having the same love, being united in spirit and purpose," which results in complete joy.

Eschatological Hope

The ultimate reward of community is found in the eschatological vision of Revelation, where the redeemed from every nation, tribe, people, and language gather in eternal worship before the throne of God (Revelation 7:9-10). This heavenly community is the culmination of God's redemptive plan, where perfect joy and unity are realized.

Throughout Scripture, community is portrayed as both a present joy and a future reward, reflecting God's intention for His people to live in harmonious and joyful relationships with one another and with Him.
