Definition and Importance: Communication is the act of conveying information, thoughts, and feelings between individuals or groups. In the biblical context, communication is a vital aspect of human relationships and divine interaction. It encompasses spoken and written words, non-verbal signals, and the transmission of God's Word to humanity.

Biblical Foundations: The Bible underscores the significance of communication from the very beginning. In Genesis, God communicates with Adam and Eve, establishing a relationship with them through His spoken word (Genesis 1:28-30). The power of God's word is further emphasized in creation, as He speaks the universe into existence (Genesis 1:3).

Divine Communication: Throughout Scripture, God communicates with His people in various ways, including direct speech, dreams, visions, and through prophets. Hebrews 1:1-2 states, "On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son." This highlights the ultimate communication of God through Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh (John 1:14).

Human Communication: The Bible provides guidance on how humans should communicate with one another. Ephesians 4:29 instructs, "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen." This verse emphasizes the importance of edifying speech that reflects Christian values.

The Role of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in communication, guiding believers into all truth (John 16:13) and helping them to communicate effectively. Acts 2 describes the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit enabled the apostles to speak in various tongues, allowing them to communicate the gospel to people of different languages.

Prayer as Communication: Prayer is a fundamental form of communication with God. Philippians 4:6 encourages believers, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Through prayer, believers express their needs, gratitude, and worship, maintaining a personal relationship with God.

The Tongue and Its Power: The Bible acknowledges the power of the tongue in communication. James 3:5-6 warns, "So too the tongue is a small part of the body, but it boasts of great things. Consider how small a spark sets a great forest ablaze. The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness among the parts of the body." This passage highlights the potential for both good and harm in spoken words.

Wisdom in Communication: Proverbs offers numerous insights into wise communication. Proverbs 15:1 states, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." This wisdom literature emphasizes the value of thoughtful and measured speech in maintaining peace and understanding.

The Gospel and Communication: The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) underscores the importance of communication in spreading the gospel. Believers are called to communicate the message of salvation to all nations, teaching and baptizing in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion: Communication, as depicted in the Bible, is a multifaceted concept that involves divine-human interaction, interpersonal relationships, and the dissemination of the gospel. It is a powerful tool that, when used in accordance with biblical principles, can edify, instruct, and bring glory to God.

COMMUNE; COMMUNICATE; COMMUNICATION

ko-mun', komun'-i-kat, ko-mu-ni-ka'-shun: To commune is to converse confidentially and sympathetically. It is represented in both Hebrew and Greek by several words literally signifying to speak (compare Luke 6:11, dialaleo; also Luke 22:4 Acts 24:26, homileo). To communicate is to impart something to another, so that it becomes common to giver and receiver. In 1 Timothy 6:18, "willing to communicate" (the Revised Version, margin "sympathize"), represents a single word koinonikoi, and refers to the habit of sharing with others either sympathy or property. the Revised Version (British and American) gives "companionships" for homiliai in 1 Corinthians 15:33 (the King James Version "communications").
