Commitment to God's Anointed

Commitment to God's anointed is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing loyalty, respect, and support for those whom God has chosen for specific roles and purposes. This concept is deeply rooted in the understanding that God, in His sovereignty, appoints leaders and servants to fulfill His divine will on earth. The anointed ones, often kings, prophets, or priests, are set apart for God's service, and the people of God are called to honor and support them.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament provides numerous examples of commitment to God's anointed. One of the most prominent figures is King David, who was anointed by the prophet Samuel to be king over Israel. Despite being pursued by King Saul, David consistently demonstrated respect for Saul as the Lord's anointed. In 1 Samuel 24:6 , David says, "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed." This passage highlights the reverence and restraint David showed, recognizing Saul's divine appointment despite Saul's personal failings.

The anointing of priests, such as Aaron and his descendants, also illustrates the importance of commitment to God's chosen servants. In Exodus 28:41 , God commands Moses, "After you put these garments on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them, so they may serve Me as priests." The anointing set them apart for sacred duties, and the Israelites were to respect their role as mediators between God and His people.

Prophets and Kings

The prophets of Israel, too, were often anointed to proclaim God's word and guide the nation. Elijah's anointing of Elisha as his successor (1 Kings 19:16) underscores the continuity of prophetic ministry and the need for the people to heed God's messengers. The commitment to these anointed prophets was crucial for the spiritual health and direction of the nation.

The anointing of kings, such as Solomon, further exemplifies the divine selection of leaders. In 1 Kings 1:39 , "Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon." This act signified God's blessing and authority upon Solomon's reign, and the people were expected to support and follow their king as God's representative.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of anointing reaches its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Messiah, whose very title means "Anointed One." Jesus is recognized as the ultimate anointed king, prophet, and priest. In Luke 4:18 , Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah, declaring, "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor." This proclamation affirms His divine mission and authority.

The early church demonstrated commitment to Jesus as God's anointed through their faith, worship, and willingness to suffer for His name. The apostles, too, were seen as anointed leaders, entrusted with spreading the gospel and establishing the church. In Acts 4:29-30 , the believers pray, "And now, Lord, consider their threats, and enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness, as You stretch out Your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of Your holy servant Jesus." This prayer reflects their dedication to the mission of the anointed apostles and their reliance on God's power.

Practical Implications

Commitment to God's anointed in contemporary Christian life involves recognizing and supporting those whom God has called to leadership within the church. This includes pastors, elders, and other ministry leaders who are tasked with shepherding the flock and proclaiming the gospel. Hebrews 13:17 instructs believers, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you."

Ultimately, commitment to God's anointed is an expression of faith in God's sovereign choice and an acknowledgment of His divine order within the community of believers.
