Call to Personal Holiness

The concept of personal holiness is a central theme in the Christian faith, emphasizing the believer's call to live a life set apart for God. This call is rooted in the nature of God Himself, who is holy, and it is reflected throughout the Scriptures as an essential aspect of the believer's relationship with God.

Biblical Foundation

The call to holiness is grounded in the character of God. Leviticus 11:44-45 states, "For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, because I am holy." This command is reiterated in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 1:15-16 echoes, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Holiness in the Old Testament

In the Old Testament, holiness is often associated with the covenant relationship between God and Israel. The Israelites were called to be a "kingdom of priests and a holy nation" (Exodus 19:6). This call involved adherence to the Law, which provided guidelines for living a life distinct from the surrounding nations. The sacrificial system and ceremonial laws underscored the need for purity and separation from sin.

Holiness in the New Testament

The New Testament expands the call to holiness beyond the Jewish people to include all believers in Christ. Through the work of Jesus Christ, believers are sanctified and called to live in a manner worthy of their calling. Romans 12:1 urges, "Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service of worship."

The Apostle Paul frequently addresses the theme of holiness in his epistles. In 1 Thessalonians 4:7 , he writes, "For God has not called us to impurity, but to holiness." This call involves a transformation of life, characterized by the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and a rejection of sinful behaviors.

Practical Aspects of Holiness

Personal holiness involves both a positional and practical aspect. Positionally, believers are made holy through faith in Christ, as stated in Hebrews 10:10 : "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." Practically, believers are called to pursue holiness in their daily lives, striving to reflect the character of Christ.

This pursuit involves a conscious effort to resist sin and to cultivate virtues such as love, humility, and integrity. Ephesians 4:22-24 instructs believers to "put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be renewed in the spirit of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the believer's journey toward holiness. The Spirit empowers and guides believers, enabling them to overcome sin and grow in Christlikeness. Galatians 5:16 advises, "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Challenges and Encouragement

While the call to holiness is clear, believers often face challenges in living out this call due to the presence of sin and temptation. However, Scripture provides encouragement and assurance of God's faithfulness. Philippians 1:6 offers hope: "being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will continue to perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus."

In summary, the call to personal holiness is a divine mandate for believers to live lives that reflect the holiness of God. It is a journey of transformation, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and marked by a commitment to live according to God's standards as revealed in Scripture.
