The name Azur, meaning "help" or "one who helps," is associated with two individuals in the biblical narrative, both of whom are connected to the prophetic ministry of Jeremiah.1. Azur, the Father of Hananiah: Azur is most notably recognized as the father of Hananiah, a false prophet who opposed Jeremiah. In Jeremiah 28, Hananiah, the son of Azur, is introduced as a prophet from Gibeon. He boldly contradicts Jeremiah's prophecies concerning the Babylonian exile. Hananiah proclaims that within two years, God would break the yoke of the king of Babylon and restore the vessels of the Lord's house, along with the exiles, back to Jerusalem. This message was in direct opposition to Jeremiah's prophecy, which foretold a seventy-year exile in Babylon. The Berean Standard Bible records this confrontation: "In the presence of all the people, Hananiah proclaimed, 'This is what the LORD says: "In this way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years."'" (Jeremiah 28:11). Jeremiah responds by affirming that Hananiah's prophecy is false and that he is leading the people into a false sense of security. The chapter concludes with the Lord declaring through Jeremiah that Hananiah would die within the year for his rebellion against God's word, which indeed comes to pass. 2. Azur, the Father of Jaazaniah: Another mention of Azur is found in Ezekiel 11:1, where he is identified as the father of Jaazaniah. This Jaazaniah is one of the leaders of the people who are condemned by God for their wicked counsel and actions in Jerusalem. The Berean Standard Bible states: "Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the LORD that faces east, and there at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people" (Ezekiel 11:1). These leaders are accused of devising iniquity and giving wicked counsel in the city, leading the people astray. The accounts of Azur's sons, Hananiah and Jaazaniah, highlight the theme of false prophecy and leadership in opposition to God's true messengers. The narratives serve as a caution against those who claim to speak for God without His authority and emphasize the importance of discerning true prophetic voices. Azur himself, while not directly involved in these events, is remembered through the actions and reputations of his sons, who played significant roles in the spiritual and political life of their time.
