In the context of the Bible, the term "assessed" often relates to the evaluation or estimation of value, particularly in matters of property, offerings, and personal worth. The concept of assessment is integral to understanding various biblical laws and practices, especially those found in the Old Testament.

Levitical Law and Property Assessment

The Book of Leviticus provides detailed instructions on the assessment of property and offerings. In Leviticus 27, the Lord gives Moses specific guidelines for the valuation of persons, animals, and property dedicated to the Lord. The chapter outlines how priests are to assess the value of these dedications, with adjustments made for age, gender, and economic status. For example, Leviticus 27:3-4 states, "If the valuation concerns a male from twenty to sixty years of age, then your valuation shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel. Or if it is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels."

Assessment of Tithes and Offerings

The assessment of tithes and offerings is another significant aspect of biblical teaching. In Leviticus 27:30-33, the Lord commands the Israelites to tithe a tenth of their produce and livestock, which is considered holy to the Lord. The passage provides instructions on how these tithes are to be assessed and redeemed if necessary. The assessment ensures that the offerings are fair and in accordance with God's commands.

Assessment of Sin and Guilt

The concept of assessment also extends to the spiritual realm, where individuals are assessed for their sins and guilt. The sacrificial system established in the Old Testament required individuals to bring offerings to atone for their sins, with the type and value of the offering often assessed based on the nature of the sin and the individual's ability to pay. Leviticus 5:15-16 describes the guilt offering: "If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against any of the LORD’s holy things, he must bring his guilt offering to the LORD: an unblemished ram from the flock, according to your valuation in silver shekels, based on the sanctuary shekel. It is a guilt offering."

Assessment in the New Testament

While the New Testament does not focus on the assessment of property or offerings in the same way as the Old Testament, the concept of spiritual assessment remains. Jesus often assessed the hearts and intentions of individuals, emphasizing the importance of inner righteousness over outward appearances. In Matthew 23:23 , Jesus criticizes the Pharisees for their meticulous tithing while neglecting "the more important matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness."

Spiritual Assessment and Judgment

The New Testament also speaks of a future assessment, where all individuals will stand before God in judgment. This ultimate assessment will determine eternal destinies based on one's faith in Christ and adherence to His teachings. Romans 14:10-12 reminds believers, "For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: 'As surely as I live, says the Lord, every knee will bow before Me; every tongue will confess to God.' So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God."

In summary, the concept of assessment in the Bible encompasses both material and spiritual dimensions, reflecting God's concern for justice, fairness, and righteousness in all aspects of life.
