Parallel Chapters Submission to Authorities
(1 Peter 2:13-20) | 1Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. | 1Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. | 1Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. | 1Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. | 1Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. |
| 2Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. | 2Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. | 2Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. | 2Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. | 2So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God's command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. |
| 3For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. | 3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, | 3For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; | 3For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: | 3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval. |
| 4For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. | 4for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. | 4for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. | 4For he is the minister of God to thee for good. | 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. | 5Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. | 5Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience' sake. | 5Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. | 5Therefore, you must submit, not only because of wrath, but also because of your conscience. |

| 7Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. | 7Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. | 7Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. | 7Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. | 7Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honor to those you owe honor. |
Love Fulfills the Law
(Leviticus 19:9-18) | 8Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. | 8Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. | 8Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. | 8Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. | 8Do not owe anyone anything, except to love one another, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. |
| 9The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery," "You shall not murder," "You shall not steal," "You shall not covet," and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." | 9For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” | 9For this, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET," and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." | 9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. | 9The commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not covet; and whatever other commandment--all are summed up by this: Love your neighbor as yourself. |
| 10Love does no harm to a neighbor. Clothe Yourselves with Christ | 11And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. | 11Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. | 11Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. | 11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. | 11Besides this, knowing the time, it is already the hour for you to wake up from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. |
| 12The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. | 12The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. | 12The night is almost gone, and the day is near.
