Parallel Chapters Gideon's Army of Three Hundred | 1Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. | 3Now announce to the army, 'Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. | 3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. | 3"Now therefore come, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, 'Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.'" | 4But the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” | 4Then the LORD said to Gideon, "The people are still too many; bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there. | 5So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink." | 5So he brought the people down to the water. And the LORD said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” | 5So he brought the people down to the water. | 8So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. | 8So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. | 8So the 300 men took the people's provisions and their trumpets into their hands. Gideon's Dream | 9During that night the LORD said to Gideon, "Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. | 9That same night the LORD said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. | 9Now the same night it came about that the LORD said to him, "Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hands. | 9And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. | 9That night the LORD said to him, "Get up and go into the camp, for I have given it into your hand. |
| 10If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah | 10But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. | 10"But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp, | 10But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: | 10But if you are afraid to go to the camp, go with Purah your servant. |
| 11and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp." So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. | 11And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. | 11and you will hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened that you may go down against the camp." So he went with Purah his servant down to the outposts of the army that was in the camp. | 11And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. | 12The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. | 13Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. "I had a dream," he was saying. "A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed." | 13When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” | 13When Gideon came, behold, a man was relating a dream to his friend. Gideon Defeats Midian | 15When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, "Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands." | 15As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the LORD has given the host of Midian into your hand.” | 15When Gideon heard the account of the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship. | 19Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. | 19So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb.
