(Psalm 13:1-6) 1The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received. | 1The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. | 1The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw. | 1The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. | 1The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. |
2How long, LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not save? | 2O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? | 2How long, O LORD, will I call for help, And You will not hear? I cry out to You, "Violence!" Yet You do not save. | 2O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! | 2How long, LORD, must I call for help and You do not listen or cry out to You about violence and You do not save? |
3Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds. | 3Why do you make me see iniquity, and why do you idly look at wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; strife and contention arise. | 3Why do You make me see iniquity, And cause me to look on wickedness? Yes, destruction and violence are before me; Strife exists and contention arises. | 3Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. | 3Why do You force me to look at injustice? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Oppression and violence are right in front of me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates. |
4Therefore the law is paralyzed, and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. | 4So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted. | 4Therefore the law is ignored And justice is never upheld. For the wicked surround the righteous; Therefore justice comes out perverted. | 4Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth. | 4This is why the law is ineffective and justice never emerges. For the wicked restrict the righteous; therefore, justice comes out perverted. |
The Lord's Answer 5"Look at the nations and watch-- and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told. | 5“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. | 5"Look among the nations! Observe! Be astonished! Wonder! Because I am doing something in your days-- You would not believe if you were told. | 5Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. | 5Look at the nations and observe-- be utterly astounded! For something is taking place in your days that you will not believe when you hear about it. |
6I am raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people, who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwellings not their own. | 6For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own. | 6"For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, That fierce and impetuous people Who march throughout the earth To seize dwelling places which are not theirs. | 6For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs. | 6Look! I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter, impetuous nation that marches across the earth's open spaces to seize territories not its own. |
7They are a feared and dreaded people; they are a law to themselves and promote their own honor. | 7They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves. | 7"They are dreaded and feared; Their justice and authority originate with themselves. | 7They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves. | 7They are fierce and terrifying; their views of justice and sovereignty stem from themselves. |
8Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk. Their cavalry gallops headlong; their horsemen come from afar. They fly like an eagle swooping to devour; | 8Their horses are swifter than leopards, more fierce than the evening wolves; their horsemen press proudly on. Their horsemen come from afar; they fly like an eagle swift to devour. | 8"Their horses are swifter than leopards And keener than wolves in the evening. Their horsemen come galloping, Their horsemen come from afar; They fly like an eagle swooping down to devour. | 8Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat. | 8Their horses are swifter than leopards and more fierce than wolves of the night. Their horsemen charge ahead; their horsemen come from distant lands. They fly like an eagle, swooping to devour. |
9they all come intent on violence. Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand. | 9They all come for violence, all their faces forward. They gather captives like sand. | 9"All of them come for violence. Their horde of faces moves forward. They collect captives like sand. | 9They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up as the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand. | 9All of them come to do violence; their faces are set in determination. They gather prisoners like sand. |
10They mock kings and scoff at rulers. They laugh at all fortified cities; by building earthen ramps they capture them. | 10At kings they scoff, and at rulers they laugh. They laugh at every fortress, for they pile up earth and take it. | 10"They mock at kings And rulers are a laughing matter to them. They laugh at every fortress And heap up rubble to capture it. | 10And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it. | 10They mock kings, and rulers are a joke to them. They laugh at every fortress and build siege ramps to capture it. |
11Then they sweep past like the wind and go on-- guilty people, whose own strength is their god." | 11Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, whose own might is their god!” | 11"Then they will sweep through like the wind and pass on. But they will be held guilty, They whose strength is their god." | 11Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god. | 11Then they sweep by like the wind and pass through. They are guilty; their strength is their god. |
Habakkuk's Second Complaint
(Psalm 11:1-7) 12LORD, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, you will never die. You, LORD, have appointed them to execute judgment; you, my Rock, have ordained them to punish. | 12Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them as a judgment, and you, O Rock, have established them for reproof. | 12Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct. | 12Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. | 12Are You not from eternity, Yahweh my God? My Holy One, You will not die. LORD, You appointed them to execute judgment; my Rock, You destined them to punish us. |
13Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves? | 13You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he? | 13Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, And You can not look on wickedness with favor. Why do You look with favor On those who deal treacherously? Why are You silent when the wicked swallow up Those more righteous than they? | 13Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? | 13Your eyes are too pure to look on evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate those who are treacherous? Why are You silent while one who is wicked swallows up one who is more righteous than himself? |
14You have made people like the fish in the sea, like the sea creatures that have no ruler. | 14You make mankind like the fish of the sea, like crawling things that have no ruler. | 14Why have You made men like the fish of the sea, Like creeping things without a ruler over them? | 14And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? | 14You have made mankind like the fish of the sea, like marine creatures that have no ruler. |
15The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks, he catches them in his net, he gathers them up in his dragnet; and so he rejoices and is glad. | 15He brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net; he gathers them in his dragnet; so he rejoices and is glad. | 15The Chaldeans bring all of them up with a hook, Drag them away with their net, And gather them together in their fishing net. Therefore they rejoice and are glad. | 15They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. | 15The Chaldeans pull them all up with a hook, catch them in their dragnet, and gather them in their fishing net; that is why they are glad and rejoice. |
16Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense to his dragnet, for by his net he lives in luxury and enjoys the choicest food. | 16Therefore he sacrifices to his net and makes offerings to his dragnet; for by them he lives in luxury, and his food is rich. | 16Therefore they offer a sacrifice to their net And burn incense to their fishing net; Because through these things their catch is large, And their food is plentiful. | 16Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. | 16That is why they sacrifice to their dragnet and burn incense to their fishing net, for by these things their portion is rich and their food plentiful. |
17Is he to keep on emptying his net, destroying nations without mercy? | 17Is he then to keep on emptying his net and mercilessly killing nations forever? | 17Will they therefore empty their net And continually slay nations without sparing? | 17Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations? | 17Will they therefore empty their net and continually slaughter nations without mercy? |
