| 1As for you, Titus, promote the kind of living that reflects wholesome teaching. | 1But as for you, communicate the behavior that goes with sound teaching. |
| 2Teach the older men to exercise self-control, to be worthy of respect, and to live wisely. They must have sound faith and be filled with love and patience. | 2Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in endurance. |
| 3Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. | 3Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good. |
| 4These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, | 4In this way they will train the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, |
| 5to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the message of God may not be discredited. |
| 6In the same way, encourage the young men to live wisely. | 6Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, |
| 7And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. | 7showing yourself to be an example of good works in every way. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, |
| 8Teach the truth so that your teaching can’t be criticized. Then those who oppose us will be ashamed and have nothing bad to say about us. | 8and a sound message that cannot be criticized, so that any opponent will be at a loss, because he has nothing evil to say about us. |
| 9Slaves must always obey their masters and do their best to please them. They must not talk back | 9Slaves are to be subject to their own masters in everything, to do what is wanted and not talk back, |
| 10or steal, but must show themselves to be entirely trustworthy and good. Then they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive in every way. | 10not pilfering, but showing all good faith, in order to bring credit to the teaching of God our Savior in everything. |
| 11For the grace of God has been revealed, bringing salvation to all people. | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people. |
| 12And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, | 12It trains us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, |
| 13while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. | 13as we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. |
| 14He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds. | 14He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good. |
| 15You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them. You have the authority to correct them when necessary, so don’t let anyone disregard what you say. | 15So communicate these things with the sort of exhortation or rebuke that carries full authority. Don't let anyone look down on you. |
