New Living Translation | NET Bible |
How great is the LORD, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain! | 1A song, a psalm by the Korahites. The LORD is great and certainly worthy of praise in the city of our God, his holy hill. |
It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! | 2It is lofty and pleasing to look at, a source of joy to the whole earth. Mount Zion resembles the peaks of Zaphon; it is the city of the great king. |
God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender. | 3God is in its fortresses; he reveals himself as its defender. |
The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city. | 4For look, the kings assemble; they advance together. |
But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away. | 5As soon as they see, they are shocked; they are terrified, they quickly retreat. |
They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor. | 6Look at them shake uncontrollably, like a woman writhing in childbirth. |
You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish shattered by a powerful east wind. | 7With an east wind you shatter the large ships. |
We had heard of the city’s glory, but now we have seen it ourselves— the city of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever. Interlude | 8We heard about God's mighty deeds, now we have seen them, in the city of the LORD, the invincible Warrior, in the city of our God. God makes it permanently secure. (Selah) |
O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. | 9We reflect on your loyal love, O God, within your temple. |
As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory. | 10The praise you receive as far away as the ends of the earth is worthy of your reputation, O God. You execute justice! |
Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice. Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice. | 11Mount Zion rejoices; the towns of Judah are happy, because of your acts of judgment. |
Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. | 12Walk around Zion! Encircle it! Count its towers! |
Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. | 13Consider its defenses! Walk through its fortresses, so you can tell the next generation about it! |
For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. | 14For God, our God, is our defender forever! He guides us! |
