New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
How great is the LORD, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain! | 1Great is the LORD! For he is to be praised greatly, even in the city of our God, his holy mountain. |
It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! | 2Beautifully situated, the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion towards the north, the city of the great King. |
God himself is in Jerusalem’s towers, revealing himself as its defender. | 3Within her citadels God is known as a place of refuge. |
The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city. | 4Behold, when the kings assembled together, when they traveled together, |
But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away. | 5they looked and were awestruck; they became afraid and ran away. |
They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor. | 6Trembling seized them there, pains like those of a woman in labor, |
You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish shattered by a powerful east wind. | 7as when an east wind destroyed the ships of Tarshish. |
We had heard of the city’s glory, but now we have seen it ourselves— the city of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever. Interlude | 8Just as we have heard, so have we seen; in the city of the LORD of the heavenly armies— even in the city of our God— God will establish her forever. Interlude |
O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. | 9God, we have meditated on your gracious love in the midst of your Temple. |
As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory. | 10God, according to your name, so is your praise to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with righteousness. |
Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice. Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice. | 11Mount Zion will be glad; the towns of Judah will rejoice because of your judgments. |
Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. | 12March around Zion; encircle her; count her towers. |
Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. | 13Take note of her ramparts; investigate her citadels; that you may speak about them to the next generation. |
For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. | 14For this God is our God forever and ever. He will guide us until death. |
