New Living Translation | King James Bible |
The LORD also said to Moses, | 1And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, |
“Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. | 2Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy. |
“Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the LORD your God. | 3Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. |
“Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God. | 4Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the LORD your God. |
“When you sacrifice a peace offering to the LORD, offer it properly so you will be accepted by God. | 5And if ye offer a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, ye shall offer it at your own will. |
The sacrifice must be eaten on the same day you offer it or on the next day. Whatever is left over until the third day must be completely burned up. | 6It shall be eaten the same day ye offer it, and on the morrow: and if ought remain until the third day, it shall be burnt in the fire. |
If any of the sacrifice is eaten on the third day, it will be contaminated, and I will not accept it. | 7And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted. |
Anyone who eats it on the third day will be punished for defiling what is holy to the LORD and will be cut off from the community. | 8Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of the LORD: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people. |
“When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. | 9And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. |
It is the same with your grape crop—do not strip every last bunch of grapes from the vines, and do not pick up the grapes that fall to the ground. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God. | 10And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the LORD your God. |
“Do not steal. “Do not deceive or cheat one another. | 11Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. |
“Do not bring shame on the name of your God by using it to swear falsely. I am the LORD. | 12And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD. |
“Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. “Do not make your hired workers wait until the next day to receive their pay. | 13Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. |
“Do not insult the deaf or cause the blind to stumble. You must fear your God; I am the LORD. | 14Thou shalt not curse the deaf, nor put a stumblingblock before the blind, but shalt fear thy God: I am the LORD. |
“Do not twist justice in legal matters by favoring the poor or being partial to the rich and powerful. Always judge people fairly. | 15Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. |
“Do not spread slanderous gossip among your people. “Do not stand idly by when your neighbor’s life is threatened. I am the LORD. | 16Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD. |
“Do not nurse hatred in your heart for any of your relatives. Confront people directly so you will not be held guilty for their sin. | 17Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. |
“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. | 18Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. |
“You must obey all my decrees. “Do not mate two different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two different kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven from two different kinds of thread. | 19Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee. |
“If a man has sex with a slave girl whose freedom has never been purchased but who is committed to become another man’s wife, he must pay full compensation to her master. But since she is not a free woman, neither the man nor the woman will be put to death. | 20And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. |
The man, however, must bring a ram as a guilt offering and present it to the LORD at the entrance of the Tabernacle. | 21And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering. |
The priest will then purify him before the LORD with the ram of the guilt offering, and the man’s sin will be forgiven. | 22And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him. |
“When you enter the land and plant fruit trees, leave the fruit unharvested for the first three years and consider it forbidden. Do not eat it. | 23And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of. |
In the fourth year the entire crop must be consecrated to the LORD as a celebration of praise. | 24But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal. |
Finally, in the fifth year you may eat the fruit. If you follow this pattern, your harvest will increase. I am the LORD your God. | 25And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God. |
“Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood. “Do not practice fortune-telling or witchcraft. | 26Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times. |
“Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards. | 27Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. |
“Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the LORD. | 28Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. |
“Do not defile your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be filled with prostitution and wickedness. | 29Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness. |
“Keep my Sabbath days of rest, and show reverence toward my sanctuary. I am the LORD. | 30Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. |
“Do not defile yourselves by turning to mediums or to those who consult the spirits of the dead. I am the LORD your God. | 31Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. |
“Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the LORD. | 32Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD. |
“Do not take advantage of foreigners who live among you in your land. | 33And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. |
Treat them like native-born Israelites, and love them as you love yourself. Remember that you were once foreigners living in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. | 34But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. |
“Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight, or volume. | 35Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. |
Your scales and weights must be accurate. Your containers for measuring dry materials or liquids must be accurate. I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. | 36Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt. |
“You must be careful to keep all of my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice. I am the LORD.” | 37Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD. |
