New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the fish. | 1Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, |
He said, “I cried out to the LORD in my great trouble, and he answered me. I called to you from the land of the dead, and LORD, you heard me! | 2And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. |
You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves. | 3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. |
Then I said, ‘O LORD, you have driven me from your presence. Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.’ | 4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. |
“I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head. | 5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. |
I sank down to the very roots of the mountains. I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O LORD my God, snatched me from the jaws of death! | 6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. |
As my life was slipping away, I remembered the LORD. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple. | 7When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. |
Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies. | 8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. |
But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the LORD alone.” | 9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. |
Then the LORD ordered the fish to spit Jonah out onto the beach. | 10And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. |
