| 1Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. | 1Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: |
| 2Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives. | 2But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. |
| 3We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. | 3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: |
| 4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. | 4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) |
| 5We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. | 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; |
| 6And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient. | 6And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. |
| 7Look at the obvious facts. Those who say they belong to Christ must recognize that we belong to Christ as much as they do. | 7Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. |
| 8I may seem to be boasting too much about the authority given to us by the Lord. But our authority builds you up; it doesn’t tear you down. So I will not be ashamed of using my authority. | 8For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: |
| 9I’m not trying to frighten you by my letters. | 9That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. |
| 10For some say, “Paul’s letters are demanding and forceful, but in person he is weak, and his speeches are worthless!” | 10For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. |
| 11Those people should realize that our actions when we arrive in person will be as forceful as what we say in our letters from far away. | 11Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present. |
| 12Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant! | 12For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. |
| 13We will not boast about things done outside our area of authority. We will boast only about what has happened within the boundaries of the work God has given us, which includes our working with you. | 13But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. |
| 14We are not reaching beyond these boundaries when we claim authority over you, as if we had never visited you. For we were the first to travel all the way to Corinth with the Good News of Christ. | 14For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: |
| 15Nor do we boast and claim credit for the work someone else has done. Instead, we hope that your faith will grow so that the boundaries of our work among you will be extended. | 15Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, |
| 16Then we will be able to go and preach the Good News in other places far beyond you, where no one else is working. Then there will be no question of our boasting about work done in someone else’s territory. | 16To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand. |
| 17As the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD.” | 17But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. |
| 18When people commend themselves, it doesn’t count for much. The important thing is for the Lord to commend them. | 18For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth. |
