New Living Translation | King James Bible |
Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. | 1And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. |
I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, | 2I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. |
for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? | 3For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? |
When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? | 4For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? |
After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. | 5Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? |
I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. | 6I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. |
It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. | 7So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. |
The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. | 8Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. |
For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building. | 9For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. |
Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful. | 10According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. |
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have—Jesus Christ. | 11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. |
Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. | 12Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; |
But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. | 13Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. |
If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. | 14If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. |
But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames. | 15If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. |
Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? | 16Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? |
God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. | 17If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. |
Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise. | 18Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. |
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” | 19For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. |
And again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.” | 20And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. |
So don’t boast about following a particular human leader. For everything belongs to you— | 21Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; |
whether Paul or Apollos or Peter, or the world, or life and death, or the present and the future. Everything belongs to you, | 22Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; |
and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. | 23And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's. |
