New Living Translation | Christian Standard Bible |
O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth! | 1LORD, God of vengeance--God of vengeance, shine! |
Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. | 2Rise up, Judge of the earth; repay the proud what they deserve. |
How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? | 3LORD, how long will the wicked--how long will the wicked celebrate? |
How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? | 4They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. |
They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own. | 5LORD, they crush your people; they oppress your heritage. |
They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans. | 6They kill the widow and the resident alien and murder the fatherless. |
“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.” | 7They say, "The LORD doesn't see it. The God of Jacob doesn't pay attention." |
Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? | 8Pay attention, you stupid people! Fools, when will you be wise? |
Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes? | 9Can the one who shaped the ear not hear, the one who formed the eye not see? |
He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing? | 10The one who instructs nations, the one who teaches mankind knowledge--does he not discipline? |
The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! | 11The LORD knows the thoughts of mankind; they are futile. |
Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. | 12LORD, how happy is anyone you discipline and teach from your law |
You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. | 13to give him relief from troubled times until a pit is dug for the wicked. |
The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. | 14The LORD will not leave his people or abandon his heritage, |
Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it. | 15for the administration of justice will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. |
Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? | 16Who stands up for me against the wicked? Who takes a stand for me against evildoers? |
Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. | 17If the LORD had not been my helper, I would soon rest in the silence of death. |
I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. | 18If I say, "My foot is slipping," your faithful love will support me, LORD. |
When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. | 19When I am filled with cares, your comfort brings me joy. |
Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? | 20Can a corrupt throne be your ally, a throne that makes evil laws? |
They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. | 22But the LORD is my refuge; my God is the rock of my protection. |
God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them. | 23He will pay them back for their sins and destroy them for their evil. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
