New Living Translation | Christian Standard Bible |
Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. | 1Unless the LORD builds a house, its builders labor over it in vain; unless the LORD watches over a city, the watchman stays alert in vain. |
It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. | 2In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food-- yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves. |
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him. | 3Sons are indeed a heritage from the LORD, offspring, a reward. |
Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. | 4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons born in one's youth. |
How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! He will not be put to shame when he confronts his accusers at the city gates. | 5Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them. They will never be put to shame when they speak with their enemies at the city gate. |
