New King James Version | New Living Translation |
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation; Preserve my life from fear of the enemy. | 1O God, listen to my complaint. Protect my life from my enemies’ threats. |
Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, | 2Hide me from the plots of this evil mob, from this gang of wrongdoers. |
Who sharpen their tongue like a sword, And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words, | 3They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows. |
That they may shoot in secret at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear. | 4They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly. |
They encourage themselves in an evil matter; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, “Who will see them?” | 5They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret. “Who will ever notice?” they ask. |
They devise iniquities: “We have perfected a shrewd scheme.” Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep. | 6As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning. |
But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they shall be wounded. | 7But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down. |
So He will make them stumble over their own tongue; All who see them shall flee away. | 8Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. |
All men shall fear, And shall declare the work of God; For they shall wisely consider His doing. | 9Then everyone will be afraid; they will proclaim the mighty acts of God and realize all the amazing things he does. |
The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and trust in Him. And all the upright in heart shall glory. | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and find shelter in him. And those who do what is right will praise him. |
