New King James VersionNew Living Translation
Then David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.1David consulted with all his officials, including the generals and captains of his army.
And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is of the LORD our God, let us send out to our brethren everywhere who are left in all the land of Israel, and with them to the priests and Levites who are in their cities and their common-lands, that they may gather together to us;2Then he addressed the entire assembly of Israel as follows: “If you approve and if it is the will of the LORD our God, let us send messages to all the Israelites throughout the land, including the priests and Levites in their towns and pasturelands. Let us invite them to come and join us.
and let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we have not inquired at it since the days of Saul.”3It is time to bring back the Ark of our God, for we neglected it during the reign of Saul.”
Then all the assembly said that they would do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.4The whole assembly agreed to this, for the people could see it was the right thing to do.
So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor in Egypt to as far as the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath Jearim.5So David summoned all Israel, from the Shihor Brook of Egypt in the south all the way to the town of Lebo-hamath in the north, to join in bringing the Ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.
And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, to Kirjath Jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who dwells between the cherubim, where His name is proclaimed.6Then David and all Israel went to Baalah of Judah (also called Kiriath-jearim) to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the LORD who is enthroned between the cherubim.
So they carried the ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart.7They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house. Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.
Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.8David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, singing songs and playing all kinds of musical instruments—lyres, harps, tambourines, cymbals, and trumpets.
And when they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumbled.9But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark.
Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.10Then the LORD’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and he struck him dead because he had laid his hand on the Ark. So Uzzah died there in the presence of God.
And David became angry because of the LORD’s outbreak against Uzza; therefore that place is called Perez Uzza to this day.11David was angry because the LORD’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today.
David was afraid of God that day, saying, “How can I bring the ark of God to me?”12David was now afraid of God, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of God back into my care?”
So David would not move the ark with him into the City of David, but took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.13So David did not move the Ark into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.
The ark of God remained with the family of Obed-Edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that he had.14The Ark of God remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and everything he owned.
