Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: | 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: |
“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, | 2"Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. |
from twenty years old and above—all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies. | 3You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army. |
And with you there shall be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his father’s house. | 4One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you. |
“These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; | 5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; |
from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; | 6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; |

from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; | 11from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; |
from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; | 12from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; |
from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran; | 13from Asher, Pagiel son of Okran; |
from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; | 14from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; |
from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.” | 15from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." |
These were chosen from the congregation, leaders of their fathers’ tribes, heads of the divisions in Israel. | 16These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. |
Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned by name, | 17Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, |
and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they recited their ancestry by families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, each one individually. | 18and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, |
As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai. | 19as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: |

From the children of Dan, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 38From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. |

So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israel— | 45All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. |

But the Levites were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe; | 47The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others. |
for the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying: | 48The LORD had said to Moses: |
“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel; | 49"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. |
but you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all things that belong to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it and camp around the tabernacle. | 50Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. |
And when the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The outsider who comes near shall be put to death. | 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death. |
The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; | 52The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard. |
but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.” | 53The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law." |
Thus the children of Israel did; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did. | 54The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses. |
