1And the children of Israel, according to their number, the heads of fathers’ houses, the captains of thousands and hundreds and their officers, served the king in every matter of the military divisions. These divisions came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, each division having twenty-four thousand.1This is the number of the people of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went, month after month throughout the year, each division numbering 24,000:
2Over the first division for the first month was Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel, and in his division were twenty-four thousand;2Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel was in charge of the first division in the first month; in his division were 24,000.
3he was of the children of Perez, and the chief of all the captains of the army for the first month.3He was a descendant of Perez and was chief of all the commanders. He served for the first month.
4Over the division of the second month was Dodai an Ahohite, and of his division Mikloth also was the leader; in his division were twenty-four thousand.4Dodai the Ahohite was in charge of the division of the second month; in his division were 24,000.
5The third captain of the army for the third month was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the priest, who was chief; in his division were twenty-four thousand.5The third commander, for the third month, was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the chief priest; in his division were 24,000.
6This was the Benaiah who was mighty among the thirty, and was over the thirty; in his division was Ammizabad his son.6This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the thirty and in command of the thirty; Ammizabad his son was in charge of his division.
7The fourth captain for the fourth month was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him; in his division were twenty-four thousand.7Asahel the brother of Joab was fourth, for the fourth month, and his son Zebadiah after him; in his division were 24,000.
8The fifth captain for the fifth month was Shamhuth the Izrahite; in his division were twenty-four thousand.8The fifth commander, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth the Izrahite; in his division were 24,000.
9The sixth captain for the sixth month was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; in his division were twenty-four thousand.9Sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira, the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; in his division were 24,000.
10The seventh captain for the seventh month was Helez the Pelonite, of the children of Ephraim; in his division were twenty-four thousand.10Seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim; in his division were 24,000.
11The eighth captain for the eighth month was Sibbechai the Hushathite, of the Zarhites; in his division were twenty-four thousand.11Eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites; in his division were 24,000.
12The ninth captain for the ninth month was Abiezer the Anathothite, of the Benjamites; in his division were twenty-four thousand.12Ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjaminite; in his division were 24,000.
13The tenth captain for the tenth month was Maharai the Netophathite, of the Zarhites; in his division were twenty-four thousand.13Tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai of Netophah, of the Zerahites; in his division were 24,000.
14The eleventh captain for the eleventh month was Benaiah the Pirathonite, of the children of Ephraim; in his division were twenty-four thousand.14Eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Pirathon, of the sons of Ephraim; in his division were 24,000.
15The twelfth captain for the twelfth month was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; in his division were twenty-four thousand.15Twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; in his division were 24,000.
16Furthermore, over the tribes of Israel: the officer over the Reubenites was Eliezer the son of Zichri; over the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maachah;16Over the tribes of Israel, for the Reubenites, Eliezer the son of Zichri was chief officer; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah;
17over the Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; over the Aaronites, Zadok;17for Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok;
18over Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; over Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;18for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael;
19over Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; over Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel;19for Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel;
20over the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; over the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah;20for the Ephraimites, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah;
21over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; over Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner;21for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner;
22over Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.22for Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23But David did not take the number of those twenty years old and under, because the LORD had said He would multiply Israel like the stars of the heavens.23David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the LORD had promised to make Israel as many as the stars of heaven.
24Joab the son of Zeruiah began a census, but he did not finish, for wrath came upon Israel because of this census; nor was the number recorded in the account of the chronicles of King David.24Joab the son of Zeruiah began to count, but did not finish. Yet wrath came upon Israel for this, and the number was not entered in the chronicles of King David.
25And Azmaveth the son of Adiel was over the king’s treasuries; and Jehonathan the son of Uzziah was over the storehouses in the field, in the cities, in the villages, and in the fortresses.25Over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth the son of Adiel; and over the treasuries in the country, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah;
26Ezri the son of Chelub was over those who did the work of the field for tilling the ground.26and over those who did the work of the field for tilling the soil was Ezri the son of Chelub;
27And Shimei the Ramathite was over the vineyards, and Zabdi the Shiphmite was over the produce of the vineyards for the supply of wine.27and over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; and over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite.
28Baal-Hanan the Gederite was over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that were in the lowlands, and Joash was over the store of oil.28Over the olive and sycamore trees in the Shephelah was Baal-hanan the Gederite; and over the stores of oil was Joash.
29And Shitrai the Sharonite was over the herds that fed in Sharon, and Shaphat the son of Adlai was over the herds that were in the valleys.29Over the herds that pastured in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; over the herds in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai.
30Obil the Ishmaelite was over the camels, Jehdeiah the Meronothite was over the donkeys,30Over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite. Over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite.
31and Jaziz the Hagrite was over the flocks. All these were the officials over King David’s property.31All these were stewards of King David’s property.
32Also Jehonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a wise man, and a scribe; and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king’s sons.32Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, being a man of understanding and a scribe. He and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni attended the king’s sons.
33Ahithophel was the king’s counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s companion.33Ahithophel was the king’s counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.
34After Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, then Abiathar. And the general of the king’s army was Joab.34Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army.
