For the director of music. A psalm of David. Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy. | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. |
Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers. | 2Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. |
They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows. | 3They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, |
They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear. | 4in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. |
They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, "Who will see it?" | 5They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" |
They plot injustice and say, "We have devised a perfect plan!" Surely the human mind and heart are cunning. | 6They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. |
But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down. | 7But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. |
He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. | 8Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, |
All people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done. | 9and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. |
The righteous will rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him! | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. |
