Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old.1Sarah lived 127 years.
She died at Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep over her.2Then she died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said,3Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife and said to the sons of Heth,
"I am a foreigner and stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead."4"I am a temporary settler among you. Grant me ownership of a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead."
The Hittites replied to Abraham,5The sons of Heth answered Abraham,
"Sir, listen to us. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead."6"Listen, sir, you are a mighty prince among us! You may bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb to prevent you from burying your dead."
Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.7Abraham got up and bowed down to the local people, the sons of Heth.
He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf8Then he said to them, "If you agree that I may bury my dead, then hear me out. Ask Ephron the son of Zohar
so he will sell me the cave of Machpelah, which belongs to him and is at the end of his field. Ask him to sell it to me for the full price as a burial site among you."9if he will sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me publicly for the full price, so that I may own it as a burial site."
Ephron the Hittite was sitting among his people and he replied to Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city.10(Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth.) Ephron the Hethite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth--before all who entered the gate of his city--
"No, my lord," he said. "Listen to me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead."11"No, my lord! Hear me out. I sell you both the field and the cave that is in it. In the presence of my people I sell it to you. Bury your dead."
Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land12Abraham bowed before the local people
and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there."13and said to Ephron in their hearing, "Hear me, if you will. I pay to you the price of the field. Take it from me so that I may bury my dead there."
Ephron answered Abraham,14Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
"Listen to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me? Bury your dead."15"Hear me, my lord. The land is worth 400 pieces of silver, but what is that between me and you? So bury your dead."
Abraham agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.16So Abraham agreed to Ephron's price and weighed out for him the price that Ephron had quoted in the hearing of the sons of Heth--400 pieces of silver, according to the standard measurement at the time.
So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre--both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field--was deeded17So Abraham secured Ephron's field in Machpelah, next to Mamre, including the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field and all around its border,
to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city.18as his property in the presence of the sons of Heth before all who entered the gate of Ephron's city.
Afterward Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.19After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.20So Abraham secured the field and the cave that was in it as a burial site from the sons of Heth.
