New International Version | King James Bible |
All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God's name and our teaching may not be slandered. | 1Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. |
Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves. These are the things you are to teach and insist on. | 2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. |
If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, | 3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; |
they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions | 4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, |
and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. | 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. |
But godliness with contentment is great gain. | 6But godliness with contentment is great gain. |
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. | 7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. |
But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. | 8And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. |
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. | 9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. |
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. | 10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. |
But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. | 11But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. |
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. | 12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. |
In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you | 13I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; |
to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, | 14That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: |
which God will bring about in his own time--God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, | 15Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; |
who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. | 16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. |
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. | 17Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; |
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. | 18That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; |
In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. | 19Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. |
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, | 20O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: |
which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all. | 21Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. |
