New International Version | International Standard Version |
From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature. |
He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry. | 2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry. |
You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. | 3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me. |
I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' | 4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?' |
The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. | 5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head. |
To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit. | 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God! |
"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. | 7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. |
"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them. | 8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs. |
But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD.'" | 9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!" |
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land. |
