For the music director; a psalm of David. Listen to me, O God, as I offer my lament! Protect my life from the enemy's terrifying attacks. | 1O God, listen to my complaint. Protect my life from my enemies’ threats. |
Hide me from the plots of evil men, from the crowd of evildoers. | 2Hide me from the plots of this evil mob, from this gang of wrongdoers. |
They sharpen their tongues like a sword; they aim their arrow, a slanderous charge, | 3They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows. |
in order to shoot down the innocent in secluded places. They shoot at him suddenly and are unafraid of retaliation. | 4They shoot from ambush at the innocent, attacking suddenly and fearlessly. |
They encourage one another to carry out their evil deed. They plan how to hide snares, and boast, "Who will see them?" | 5They encourage each other to do evil and plan how to set their traps in secret. “Who will ever notice?” they ask. |
They devise unjust schemes; they disguise a well-conceived plot. Man's inner thoughts cannot be discovered. | 6As they plot their crimes, they say, “We have devised the perfect plan!” Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning. |
But God will shoot at them; suddenly they will be wounded by an arrow. | 7But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down. |
Their slander will bring about their demise. All who see them will shudder, | 8Their own tongues will ruin them, and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn. |
and all people will fear. They will proclaim what God has done, and reflect on his deeds. | 9Then everyone will be afraid; they will proclaim the mighty acts of God and realize all the amazing things he does. |
The godly will rejoice in the LORD and take shelter in him. All the morally upright will boast. | 10The godly will rejoice in the LORD and find shelter in him. And those who do what is right will praise him. |
