| 1Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the wilderness of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites departed from the land of Egypt. He said: | 1A year after Israel’s departure from Egypt, the LORD spoke to Moses in the Tabernacle in the wilderness of Sinai. On the first day of the second month of that year he said, |
| 2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and families, counting the name of every individual male. | 2“From the whole community of Israel, record the names of all the warriors by their clans and families. List all the men |
| 3You and Aaron are to number all in Israel who can serve in the army, those who are twenty years old or older, by their divisions. | 3twenty years old or older who are able to go to war. You and Aaron must register the troops, |
| 4And to help you there is to be a man from each tribe, each man the head of his family. | 4and you will be assisted by one family leader from each tribe. |

| 16These were the ones chosen from the community, leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the thousands of Israel. | 16These are the chosen leaders of the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel.” |
| 17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned specifically by name, | 17So Moses and Aaron called together these chosen leaders, |
| 18and they assembled the entire community together on the first day of the second month. Then the people recorded their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men who were twenty years old or older were listed by name individually, | 18and they assembled the whole community of Israel on that very day. All the people were registered according to their ancestry by their clans and families. The men of Israel who were twenty years old or older were listed one by one, |
| 19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. And so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. | 19just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So Moses recorded their names in the wilderness of Sinai. |
| 20And they were as follows: The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn son of Israel: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name individually. | 20This is the number of men twenty years old or older who were able to go to war, as their names were listed in the records of their clans and families : Tribe Number Reuben (Jacob’s oldest son) 46,500 |
| 21Those of them who were numbered from the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. | 21 |
| 22From the descendants of Simeon: According to the records of their clans and families, all the males numbered of them twenty years old or older who could serve in the army were listed by name individually. | 22Simeon 59,300 |

| 45All the Israelites who were twenty years old or older, who could serve in Israel's army, were numbered according to their families. | 45They were registered by families—all the men of Israel who were twenty years old or older and able to go to war. |
| 46And all those numbered totaled 603,550. | 46The total number was 603,550. |
| 47But the Levites, according to the tribe of their fathers, were not numbered among them. | 47But this total did not include the Levites. |
| 48The LORD had said to Moses, | 48For the LORD had said to Moses, |
| 49"Only the tribe of Levi you must not number or count with the other Israelites. | 49“Do not include the tribe of Levi in the registration; do not count them with the rest of the Israelites. |
| 50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, over all its furnishings and over everything in it. They must carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; and they must attend to it and camp around it. | 50Put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Covenant, along with all its furnishings and equipment. They must carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings as you travel, and they must take care of it and camp around it. |
| 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites must take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be reassembled, the Levites must set it up. Any unauthorized person who approaches it must be killed. | 51Whenever it is time for the Tabernacle to move, the Levites will take it down. And when it is time to stop, they will set it up again. But any unauthorized person who goes too near the Tabernacle must be put to death. |
| 52"The Israelites will camp according to their divisions, each man in his camp, and each man by his standard. | 52Each tribe of Israel will camp in a designated area with its own family banner. |
| 53But the Levites must camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that the LORD's anger will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the testimony." | 53But the Levites will camp around the Tabernacle of the Covenant to protect the community of Israel from the LORD’s anger. The Levites are responsible to stand guard around the Tabernacle.” |
| 54The Israelites did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses--that is what they did. | 54So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
