NET Bible | New International Version |
For the music director; a well-written song by David. It was written when Doeg the Edomite went and informed Saul: "David has arrived at the home of Ahimelech." Why do you boast about your evil plans, O powerful man? God's loyal love protects me all day long! | 1For the director of music. A maskil of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: "David has gone to the house of Ahimelek." Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? |
Your tongue carries out your destructive plans; it is as effective as a sharp razor, O deceiver. | 2You who practice deceit, your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor. |
You love evil more than good, lies more than speaking the truth. (Selah) | 3You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. |
You love to use all the words that destroy, and the tongue that deceives. | 4You love every harmful word, you deceitful tongue! |
Yet God will make you a permanent heap of ruins. He will scoop you up and remove you from your home; he will uproot you from the land of the living. (Selah) | 5Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. |
When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe, and will mock the evildoer, saying: | 6The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, |
"Look, here is the man who would not make God his protector! He trusted in his great wealth and was confident about his plans to destroy others." | 7"Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!" |
But I am like a flourishing olive tree in the house of God; I continually trust in God's loyal love. | 8But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever. |
I will continually thank you when you execute judgment; I will rely on you, for your loyal followers know you are good. | 9For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good. |
