In the same way, wives, be subject to your own husbands. Then, even if some are disobedient to the word, they will be won over without a word by the way you live, | 1In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, |
when they see your pure and reverent conduct. | 2as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. |
Let your beauty not be external--the braiding of hair and wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes-- | 3Your adornment must not be merely external-- braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; |
but the inner person of the heart, the lasting beauty of a gentle and tranquil spirit, which is precious in God's sight. | 4but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. |
For in the same way the holy women who hoped in God long ago adorned themselves by being subject to their husbands, | 5For in this way in former times the holy women also, who hoped in God, used to adorn themselves, being submissive to their own husbands; |
like Sarah who obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You become her children when you do what is good and have no fear in doing so. | 6just as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, and you have become her children if you do what is right without being frightened by any fear. |
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as the weaker partners and show them honor as fellow heirs of the grace of life. In this way nothing will hinder your prayers. | 7You husbands in the same way, live with your wives in an understanding way, as with someone weaker, since she is a woman; and show her honor as a fellow heir of the grace of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. |
Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble. | 8To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; |
Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but instead bless others because you were called to inherit a blessing. | 9not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. |
For the one who wants to love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from uttering deceit. | 10For, "THE ONE WHO DESIRES LIFE, TO LOVE AND SEE GOOD DAYS, MUST KEEP HIS TONGUE FROM EVIL AND HIS LIPS FROM SPEAKING DECEIT. |
And he must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. | 11"HE MUST TURN AWAY FROM EVIL AND DO GOOD; HE MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT. |
For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the Lord's face is against those who do evil. | 12"FOR THE EYES OF THE LORD ARE TOWARD THE RIGHTEOUS, AND HIS EARS ATTEND TO THEIR PRAYER, BUT THE FACE OF THE LORD IS AGAINST THOSE WHO DO EVIL." |
For who is going to harm you if you are devoted to what is good? | 13Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? |
But in fact, if you happen to suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. But do not be terrified of them or be shaken. | 14But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, |
But set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks about the hope you possess. | 15but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; |
Yet do it with courtesy and respect, keeping a good conscience, so that those who slander your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they accuse you. | 16and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. |
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil. | 17For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong. |
Because Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, to bring you to God, by being put to death in the flesh but by being made alive in the spirit. | 18For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; |
In it he went and preached to the spirits in prison, | 19in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, |
after they were disobedient long ago when God patiently waited in the days of Noah as an ark was being constructed. In the ark a few, that is eight souls, were delivered through water. | 20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. |
And this prefigured baptism, which now saves you--not the washing off of physical dirt but the pledge of a good conscience to God--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, | 21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-- through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, |
who went into heaven and is at the right hand of God with angels and authorities and powers subject to him. | 22who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him. |
