NET Bible | English Standard Version |
O LORD, the God who avenges! O God who avenges, reveal your splendor! | 1O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! |
Rise up, O judge of the earth! Pay back the proud! | 2Rise up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve! |
O LORD, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked celebrate? | 3O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult? |
They spew out threats and speak defiantly; all the evildoers boast. | 4They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. |
O LORD, they crush your people; they oppress the nation that belongs to you. | 5They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. |
They kill the widow and the one residing outside his native land, and they murder the fatherless. | 6They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless; |
Then they say, "The LORD does not see this; the God of Jacob does not take notice of it." | 7and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive.” |
Take notice of this, you ignorant people! You fools, when will you ever understand? | 8Understand, O dullest of the people! Fools, when will you be wise? |
Does the one who makes the human ear not hear? Does the one who forms the human eye not see? | 9He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? |
Does the one who disciplines the nations not punish? He is the one who imparts knowledge to human beings! | 10He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke? He who teaches man knowledge— |
The LORD knows that peoples' thoughts are morally bankrupt. | 11the LORD—knows the thoughts of man, that they are but a breath. |
How blessed is the one whom you instruct, O LORD, the one whom you teach from your law, | 12Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, |
in order to protect him from times of trouble, until the wicked are destroyed. | 13to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. |
Certainly the LORD does not forsake his people; he does not abandon the nation that belongs to him. | 14For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; |
For justice will prevail, and all the morally upright will be vindicated. | 15for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. |
Who will rise up to defend me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against the evildoers? | 16Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? |
If the LORD had not helped me, I would have laid down in the silence of death. | 17If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. |
If I say, "My foot is slipping," your loyal love, O LORD, supports me. | 18When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. |
When worries threaten to overwhelm me, your soothing touch makes me happy. | 19When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. |
Cruel rulers are not your allies, those who make oppressive laws. | 20Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who frame injustice by statute? |
They conspire against the blameless, and condemn to death the innocent. | 21They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD will protect me, and my God will shelter me. | 22But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. |
He will pay them back for their sin. He will destroy them because of their evil; the LORD our God will destroy them. | 23He will bring back on them their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. |
