New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
O LORD, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth! | 1O LORD, the God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, let your glorious justice shine forth! |
Rise up, O Judge of the earth, Render recompense to the proud. | 2Arise, O Judge of the earth. Give the proud what they deserve. |
How long shall the wicked, O LORD, How long shall the wicked exult? | 3How long, O LORD? How long will the wicked be allowed to gloat? |
They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly; All who do wickedness vaunt themselves. | 4How long will they speak with arrogance? How long will these evil people boast? |
They crush Your people, O LORD, And afflict Your heritage. | 5They crush your people, LORD, hurting those you claim as your own. |
They slay the widow and the stranger And murder the orphans. | 6They kill widows and foreigners and murder orphans. |
They have said, "The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed." | 7“The LORD isn’t looking,” they say, “and besides, the God of Israel doesn’t care.” |
Pay heed, you senseless among the people; And when will you understand, stupid ones? | 8Think again, you fools! When will you finally catch on? |
He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? | 9Is he deaf—the one who made your ears? Is he blind—the one who formed your eyes? |
He who chastens the nations, will He not rebuke, Even He who teaches man knowledge? | 10He punishes the nations—won’t he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn’t he also know what you are doing? |
The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are a mere breath. | 11The LORD knows people’s thoughts; he knows they are worthless! |
Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O LORD, And whom You teach out of Your law; | 12Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions. |
That You may grant him relief from the days of adversity, Until a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13You give them relief from troubled times until a pit is dug to capture the wicked. |
For the LORD will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance. | 14The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. |
For judgment will again be righteous, And all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15Judgment will again be founded on justice, and those with virtuous hearts will pursue it. |
Who will stand up for me against evildoers? Who will take his stand for me against those who do wickedness? | 16Who will protect me from the wicked? Who will stand up for me against evildoers? |
If the LORD had not been my help, My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence. | 17Unless the LORD had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. |
If I should say, "My foot has slipped," Your lovingkindness, O LORD, will hold me up. | 18I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O LORD, supported me. |
When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul. | 19When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. |
Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, One which devises mischief by decree? | 20Can unjust leaders claim that God is on their side— leaders whose decrees permit injustice? |
They band themselves together against the life of the righteous And condemn the innocent to death. | 21They gang up against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD has been my stronghold, And my God the rock of my refuge. | 22But the LORD is my fortress; my God is the mighty rock where I hide. |
He has brought back their wickedness upon them And will destroy them in their evil; The LORD our God will destroy them. | 23God will turn the sins of evil people back on them. He will destroy them for their sins. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
