A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, according to Shigionoth. | 1This prayer was sung by the prophet Habakkuk : |
LORD, I have heard the report about You and I fear. O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years, In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy. | 2I have heard all about you, LORD. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy. |
God comes from Teman, And the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the heavens, And the earth is full of His praise. | 3I see God moving across the deserts from Edom, the Holy One coming from Mount Paran. His brilliant splendor fills the heavens, and the earth is filled with his praise. |
His radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand, And there is the hiding of His power. | 4His coming is as brilliant as the sunrise. Rays of light flash from his hands, where his awesome power is hidden. |
Before Him goes pestilence, And plague comes after Him. | 5Pestilence marches before him; plague follows close behind. |
He stood and surveyed the earth; He looked and startled the nations. Yes, the perpetual mountains were shattered, The ancient hills collapsed. His ways are everlasting. | 6When he stops, the earth shakes. When he looks, the nations tremble. He shatters the everlasting mountains and levels the eternal hills. He is the Eternal One! |
I saw the tents of Cushan under distress, The tent curtains of the land of Midian were trembling. | 7I see the people of Cushan in distress, and the nation of Midian trembling in terror. |
Did the LORD rage against the rivers, Or was Your anger against the rivers, Or was Your wrath against the sea, That You rode on Your horses, On Your chariots of salvation? | 8Was it in anger, LORD, that you struck the rivers and parted the sea? Were you displeased with them? No, you were sending your chariots of salvation! |
Your bow was made bare, The rods of chastisement were sworn. Selah. You cleaved the earth with rivers. | 9You brandished your bow and your quiver of arrows. You split open the earth with flowing rivers. |
The mountains saw You and quaked; The downpour of waters swept by. The deep uttered forth its voice, It lifted high its hands. | 10The mountains watched and trembled. Onward swept the raging waters. The mighty deep cried out, lifting its hands in submission. |
Sun and moon stood in their places; They went away at the light of Your arrows, At the radiance of Your gleaming spear. | 11The sun and moon stood still in the sky as your brilliant arrows flew and your glittering spear flashed. |
In indignation You marched through the earth; In anger You trampled the nations. | 12You marched across the land in anger and trampled the nations in your fury. |
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For the salvation of Your anointed. You struck the head of the house of the evil To lay him open from thigh to neck. Selah. | 13You went out to rescue your chosen people, to save your anointed ones. You crushed the heads of the wicked and stripped their bones from head to toe. |
You pierced with his own spears The head of his throngs. They stormed in to scatter us; Their exultation was like those Who devour the oppressed in secret. | 14With his own weapons, you destroyed the chief of those who rushed out like a whirlwind, thinking Israel would be easy prey. |
You trampled on the sea with Your horses, On the surge of many waters. | 15You trampled the sea with your horses, and the mighty waters piled high. |
I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered. Decay enters my bones, And in my place I tremble. Because I must wait quietly for the day of distress, For the people to arise who will invade us. | 16I trembled inside when I heard this; my lips quivered with fear. My legs gave way beneath me, and I shook in terror. I will wait quietly for the coming day when disaster will strike the people who invade us. |
Though the fig tree should not blossom And there be no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive should fail And the fields produce no food, Though the flock should be cut off from the fold And there be no cattle in the stalls, | 17Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, |
Yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. | 18yet I will rejoice in the LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! |
The Lord GOD is my strength, And He has made my feet like hinds' feet, And makes me walk on my high places. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments. | 19The Sovereign LORD is my strength! He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. (For the choir director: This prayer is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) |
