Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: |
"Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head | 2"Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. |
from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by their armies. | 3You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army. |
"With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father's household. | 4One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you. |
"These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; | 5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; |
of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; | 6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; |
of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; | 7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; |
of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; | 8from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; |
of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; | 9from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; |
of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; | 10from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; |
of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; | 11from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; |
of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; | 12from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; |
of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; | 13from Asher, Pagiel son of Okran; |
of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; | 14from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; |
of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan. | 15from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." |
"These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers' tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel." | 16These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. |
So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, | 17Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, |
and they assembled all the congregation together on the first of the second month. Then they registered by ancestry in their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head, | 18and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, |
just as the LORD had commanded Moses. So he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. | 19as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: |
Now the sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, their genealogical registration by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war, | 20From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. |

So all the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers' households, from twenty years old and upward, whoever was able to go out to war in Israel, | 45All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. |
even all the numbered men were 603,550. | 46The total number was 603,550. |
The Levites, however, were not numbered among them by their fathers' tribe. | 47The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others. |
For the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying, | 48The LORD had said to Moses: |
"Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor shall you take their census among the sons of Israel. | 49"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. |
"But you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle. | 50Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. |
"So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near shall be put to death. | 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death. |
"The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies. | 52The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard. |
"But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony." | 53The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law." |
Thus the sons of Israel did; according to all which the LORD had commanded Moses, so they did. | 54The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses. |
