Now Sarah lived one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. | 1Sarah lived 127 years. |
Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. | 2Then she died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. |
Then Abraham rose from before his dead, and spoke to the sons of Heth, saying, | 3Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife and said to the sons of Heth, |
"I am a stranger and a sojourner among you; give me a burial site among you that I may bury my dead out of my sight." | 4"I am a temporary settler among you. Grant me ownership of a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead." |
The sons of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him, | 5The sons of Heth answered Abraham, |
"Hear us, my lord, you are a mighty prince among us; bury your dead in the choicest of our graves; none of us will refuse you his grave for burying your dead." | 6"Listen, sir, you are a mighty prince among us! You may bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb to prevent you from burying your dead." |
So Abraham rose and bowed to the people of the land, the sons of Heth. | 7Abraham got up and bowed down to the local people, the sons of Heth. |
And he spoke with them, saying, "If it is your wish for me to bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and approach Ephron the son of Zohar for me, | 8Then he said to them, "If you agree that I may bury my dead, then hear me out. Ask Ephron the son of Zohar |
that he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he owns, which is at the end of his field; for the full price let him give it to me in your presence for a burial site." | 9if he will sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me publicly for the full price, so that I may own it as a burial site." |
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth; even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying, | 10(Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth.) Ephron the Hethite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth--before all who entered the gate of his city-- |
"No, my lord, hear me; I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the sons of my people I give it to you; bury your dead." | 11"No, my lord! Hear me out. I sell you both the field and the cave that is in it. In the presence of my people I sell it to you. Bury your dead." |
And Abraham bowed before the people of the land. | 12Abraham bowed before the local people |
He spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, "If you will only please listen to me; I will give the price of the field, accept it from me that I may bury my dead there." | 13and said to Ephron in their hearing, "Hear me, if you will. I pay to you the price of the field. Take it from me so that I may bury my dead there." |
Then Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, | 14Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him, |
"My lord, listen to me; a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between me and you? So bury your dead." | 15"Hear me, my lord. The land is worth 400 pieces of silver, but what is that between me and you? So bury your dead." |
Abraham listened to Ephron; and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, commercial standard. | 16So Abraham agreed to Ephron's price and weighed out for him the price that Ephron had quoted in the hearing of the sons of Heth--400 pieces of silver, according to the standard measurement at the time. |
So Ephron's field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were within all the confines of its border, were deeded over | 17So Abraham secured Ephron's field in Machpelah, next to Mamre, including the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field and all around its border, |
to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city. | 18as his property in the presence of the sons of Heth before all who entered the gate of Ephron's city. |
After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. | 19After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. |
So the field and the cave that is in it, were deeded over to Abraham for a burial site by the sons of Heth. | 20So Abraham secured the field and the cave that was in it as a burial site from the sons of Heth. |
