Now it came about in the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was by the river Chebar among the exiles, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God. | 1In the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, while I was among the exiles by the Chebar Canal, the heavens opened and I saw visions of God. |
(On the fifth of the month in the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's exile, | 2On the fifth day of the month--it was the fifth year of King Jehoiachin's exile-- |
the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and there the hand of the LORD came upon him.) | 3the word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the Chebar Canal. And the LORD's hand was on him there. |
As I looked, behold, a storm wind was coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing forth continually and a bright light around it, and in its midst something like glowing metal in the midst of the fire. | 4I looked and there was a whirlwind coming from the north, a great cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire, there was a gleam like amber. |
Within it there were figures resembling four living beings. And this was their appearance: they had human form. | 5The form of four living creatures came from it. And this was their appearance: They had human form, |
Each of them had four faces and four wings. | 6but each of them had four faces and four wings. |
Their legs were straight and their feet were like a calf's hoof, and they gleamed like burnished bronze. | 7Their legs were straight, and the soles of their feet were like the hooves of a calf, sparkling like the gleam of polished bronze. |
Under their wings on their four sides were human hands. As for the faces and wings of the four of them, | 8They had human hands under their wings on their four sides. All four of them had faces and wings. |
their wings touched one another; their faces did not turn when they moved, each went straight forward. | 9Their wings were touching. The creatures did not turn as they moved; each one went straight ahead. |
As for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man; all four had the face of a lion on the right and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle. | 10The form of each of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right, the face of an ox on the left, and the face of an eagle. |
Such were their faces. Their wings were spread out above; each had two touching another being, and two covering their bodies. | 11That is what their faces were like. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching that of another and two wings covering its body. |
And each went straight forward; wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go, without turning as they went. | 12Each creature went straight ahead. Wherever the Spirit wanted to go, they went without turning as they moved. |
In the midst of the living beings there was something that looked like burning coals of fire, like torches darting back and forth among the living beings. The fire was bright, and lightning was flashing from the fire. | 13The form of the living creatures was like the appearance of burning coals of fire and torches. Fire was moving back and forth between the living creatures; it was bright, with lightning coming out of it. |
And the living beings ran to and fro like bolts of lightning. | 14The creatures were darting back and forth like flashes of lightning. |
Now as I looked at the living beings, behold, there was one wheel on the earth beside the living beings, for each of the four of them. | 15When I looked at the living creatures, there was one wheel on the ground beside each creature that had four faces. |
The appearance of the wheels and their workmanship was like sparkling beryl, and all four of them had the same form, their appearance and workmanship being as if one wheel were within another. | 16The appearance of the wheels and their craftsmanship was like the gleam of beryl, and all four had the same form. Their appearance and craftsmanship was like a wheel within a wheel. |
Whenever they moved, they moved in any of their four directions without turning as they moved. | 17When they moved, they went in any of the four directions, without pivoting as they moved. |
As for their rims they were lofty and awesome, and the rims of all four of them were full of eyes round about. | 18Their rims were large and frightening. Each of their four rims were full of eyes all around. |
Whenever the living beings moved, the wheels moved with them. And whenever the living beings rose from the earth, the wheels rose also. | 19So when the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the earth, the wheels also rose. |
Wherever the spirit was about to go, they would go in that direction. And the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels. | 20Wherever the Spirit wanted to go, the creatures went in the direction the Spirit was moving. The wheels rose alongside them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. |
Whenever those went, these went; and whenever those stood still, these stood still. And whenever those rose from the earth, the wheels rose close beside them; for the spirit of the living beings was in the wheels. | 21When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still; and when the creatures rose from the earth, the wheels rose alongside them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. |
Now over the heads of the living beings there was something like an expanse, like the awesome gleam of crystal, spread out over their heads. | 22The shape of an expanse, with a gleam like awe-inspiring crystal, was spread out over the heads of the living creatures. |
Under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward the other; each one also had two wings covering its body on the one side and on the other. | 23And under the expanse their wings extended one toward another. Each of them also had two wings covering their bodies. |
I also heard the sound of their wings like the sound of abundant waters as they went, like the voice of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army camp; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings. | 24When they moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the roar of mighty waters, like the voice of the Almighty, and a sound of commotion like the noise of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings. |
And there came a voice from above the expanse that was over their heads; whenever they stood still, they dropped their wings. | 25A voice came from above the expanse over their heads; when they stood still, they lowered their wings. |
Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a man. | 26The shape of a throne with the appearance of sapphire stone was above the expanse. There was a form with the appearance of a human on the throne high above. |
Then I noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something like glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and there was a radiance around Him. | 27From what seemed to be His waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire enclosing it all around. From what seemed to be His waist down, I also saw what looked like fire. There was a brilliant light all around Him. |
As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking. | 28The appearance of the brilliant light all around was like that of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the form of the LORD's glory. When I saw it, I fell facedown and heard a voice speaking. |
