She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah. | 2and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. |
Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim. | 3Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. Dedan's sons were the Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. |

Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac; | 5Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac. |
but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east. | 6But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, and while he was still alive he sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the East. |
These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years. | 7This is the length of Abraham's life: 175 years. |
Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people. | 8He took his last breath and died at a good old age, old and contented, and he was gathered to his people. |
Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, | 9His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hethite. |
the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife. | 10This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hethites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. |
It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi. | 11After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi. |
Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham; | 12These are the family records of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave, bore to Abraham. |
and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam | 13These are the names of Ishmael's sons; their names according to the family records are Nebaioth, Ishmael's firstborn, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, |
and Mishma and Dumah and Massa, | 14Mishma, Dumah, Massa, |
Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah. | 15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. |
These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes. | 16These are Ishmael's sons, and these are their names by their settlements and encampments: twelve leaders of their clans. |
These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people. | 17This is the length of Ishmael's life: 137 years. He took his last breath and died, and was gathered to his people. |
They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives. | 18And they settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go toward Asshur. He stayed near all his relatives. |
Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac; | 19These are the family records of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac. |
and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. | 20Isaac was forty years old when he took as his wife Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. |
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. | 21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The LORD was receptive to his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. |
But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. | 22But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. |
The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger." | 23And the LORD said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger. |
When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. | 24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. |
Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. | 25The first one came out red-looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau. |
Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them. | 26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau's heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born. |
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. | 27When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. |
Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. | 28Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. |
When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; | 29Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted. |
and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. | 30He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I'm exhausted." That is why he was also named Edom. |
But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." | 31Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright." |
Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" | 32"Look," said Esau, "I'm about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?" |
And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. | 33Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him. |
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. | 34Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright. |
