For the choir director. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy. | 1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. |
Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity, | 2Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity, |
Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow, | 3who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows, |
To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear. | 4ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear. |
They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, "Who can see them?" | 5They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say. |
They devise injustices, saying, "We are ready with a well-conceived plot"; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep. | 6They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious. |
But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded. | 7But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded. |
So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head. | 8They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads. |
Then all men will fear, And they will declare the work of God, And will consider what He has done. | 9Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done. |
The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him; And all the upright in heart will glory. | 10Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult. |
