| 13Someone escaped, arrived, and reported what had happened to Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks belonging to Mamre the Amorite, whose brothers Eshcol and Aner were allied with Abram. | 13But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to Abram the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies. |
| 14When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken prisoner, he gathered together 318 of his trained men, who had been born in his household, and they went out in pursuit as far as Dan. | 14When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, he mobilized the 318 trained men who had been born into his household. | 18King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine, since he was serving as the priest of God Most High. | 18And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. |
| 19Melchizedek blessed Abram and said, "Abram is blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, | 19Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. |
| 20and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your control." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. | 20And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered. |
| 21The king of Sodom told Abram, "Return the people to me, and you take the possessions for yourself." | 21The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.” |
| 22But Abram answered the king of Sodom, "I have made an oath to the LORD God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, | 22Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, |
| 23that I will not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you won't be able to say, 'I made Abram rich.' | 23that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise you might say, ‘I am the one who made Abram rich.’ |
| 24I will take nothing except what my warriors have eaten. But as for what belongs to the men who were allied with me, including Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take their share." | 24I will accept only what my young warriors have already eaten, and I request that you give a fair share of the goods to my allies—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre.” |
