God of vengeance, LORD God of vengeance, display your splendor! | 1O LORD, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth! |
Stand up, judge of the earth, and repay the proud. | 2Rise up, O Judge of the earth, Render recompense to the proud. |
How long will the wicked, LORD, how long will the wicked continue to triumph? | 3How long shall the wicked, O LORD, How long shall the wicked exult? |
When they speak, they spew arrogance. Everyone who practices iniquity brags about it. | 4They pour forth words, they speak arrogantly; All who do wickedness vaunt themselves. |
LORD, they have crushed your people, afflicting your heritage. | 5They crush Your people, O LORD, And afflict Your heritage. |
The wicked kill widows and foreigners; they murder orphans. | 6They slay the widow and the stranger And murder the orphans. |
They say, "The LORD cannot see, and the God of Jacob will not notice." | 7They have said, "The LORD does not see, Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed." |
Pay attention, you dull ones among the crowds! You fools! Will you ever become wise? | 8Pay heed, you senseless among the people; And when will you understand, stupid ones? |
The one who formed the ear can hear, can he not? The one who made the eyes can see, can he not? | 9He who planted the ear, does He not hear? He who formed the eye, does He not see? |
The one who disciplines nations can rebuke them, can he not? The one who teaches mankind can discern, can he not? | 10He who chastens the nations, will He not rebuke, Even He who teaches man knowledge? |
The LORD knows the thoughts of human beings— that they are futile. | 11The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are a mere breath. |
How blessed is the man whom you instruct, LORD, whom you teach from your Law, | 12Blessed is the man whom You chasten, O LORD, And whom You teach out of Your law; |
keeping him calm when times are troubled until a pit has been dug for the wicked. | 13That You may grant him relief from the days of adversity, Until a pit is dug for the wicked. |
For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage. | 14For the LORD will not abandon His people, Nor will He forsake His inheritance. |
Righteousness will be restored with justice, and all the pure of heart will follow it. | 15For judgment will again be righteous, And all the upright in heart will follow it. |
Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity? | 16Who will stand up for me against evildoers? Who will take his stand for me against those who do wickedness? |
If the LORD had not been my helper, I would have quickly become silent. | 17If the LORD had not been my help, My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence. |
When I say that my foot is shaking, your gracious love, LORD, will sustain me. | 18If I should say, "My foot has slipped," Your lovingkindness, O LORD, will hold me up. |
When my anxious inner thoughts become overwhelming, your comfort encourages me. | 19When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul. |
Will destructive national leaders, who plan wicked things through misuse of the Law, be allied with you? | 20Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, One which devises mischief by decree? |
They gather together against the righteous, condemning the innocent to death. | 21They band themselves together against the life of the righteous And condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD is my stronghold, and my God, the rock, is my refuge. | 22But the LORD has been my stronghold, And my God the rock of my refuge. |
He will repay them for their sin; he will annihilate them because of their evil. The LORD our God will annihilate them. | 23He has brought back their wickedness upon them And will destroy them in their evil; The LORD our God will destroy them. |
